Travel Doctor Services

Share

travelSouthern Orange County Pediatric Associates is now offering “Travel Doctor” services at our Ladera Ranch office with Dr. Katherine Roberts.

Why a travel doctor?
We have been receiving an increasing number of patients seeking guidance and vaccines for foreign travel. Currently the main place for patients to seek such guidance is the Department of Public Health where there is often a long wait to get an appointment. Dr. Roberts is one of a select number of doctors who is certified to give the yellow fever vaccine, and is equipped to give all other travel vaccines available in the US. She also has worked to put together up-to-date information helpful in guiding patients to be safe and healthy while traveling abroad.

What is the visit like?
During your consultation with Dr. Roberts, she will sit down with you and your child/children to discuss her recommendations to stay healthy during your upcoming travels. Depending on where and how long you will be traveling, she will discuss what health risks could be involved and the recommended vaccines and medications specific for your planned travel. If your child will be receiving injectable travel vaccines, she will order them that day with expected arrival to our office within 2-3 business days depending on the vaccine. We do not keep travel vaccines in stock, therefore you will not receive the injectable vaccines the day of your consultation. When you return for the vaccine, you will see the nurse only to administer the vaccine(s).

What is the cost and will my insurance cover it?
The consultation fee is $100 and will not be billed to your insurance. This cost includes your return visit to receive the vaccines.

The vaccine fee will be billed to your insurance, however it is advised to contact your insurance company ahead of time as not all plans cover travel vaccines.

How far in advance should I schedule my appointment?
We recommend you schedule your appointment a minimum of 6 weeks before travel, as it can take up to 4 weeks for vaccines to take effect, and you’ll want to allow plenty of time for the vaccine to be ordered and received after the consultation. Also, please note that the patient must have had a well child visit within the last year prior to the travel consult.

What information do I need to have ready when I make my appointment?
When you call to make the appointment, please give the scheduler your dates of travel, location of travel, and what type of activities you plan to do, such as hiking and camping versus staying mostly in large cities.
